A word from our Spry Labs Managing Director.
That’s a wrap on Spry Labs’ March 2017 Data Jam with Humana – the second of its kind in less than a year!
It was fast. It was high-energy. The process wasn’t even necessarily “clean.” But that’s exactly what we had in mind for Humana.
After their first Data Jam in Cincinnati resulted in a big success – pushing a D.C. startup through two proof-of-concepts to a pilot in less than four months – the Humana team was intensely focused on another Jam session.
This time around, we launched further into our network, recruiting a national set of 14 teams and selecting five teams as finalists. With a project brief designed to streamline and rethink the underwriting process in healthcare insurance, the opportunity to change the game was clear. Startups from around the country showed up for the contest (including contestants from California and Philadelphia), but only one could be crowned the winner.
HealthVerity the Philly-based startup, funded by Greycroft Ventures and Flare Capital, with a cloud-based platform that discovers, licenses and links HIPAA compliant and de-identified healthcare data, was crowned the champion. Their CEO was thrilled at the success of his team’s submission and walked away with the $5,000 prize. (Congrats!)
Lucky for HealthVerity and all the other contestants, this was merely the start of the journey of solution sourcing with Humana. Connections, networks and solutions were all produced during the two-day event that are only just beginning.
As we help Humana follow-up on this Data Jam, we’ll be back with more stories of BigCo-to-startup connections… soon.
